About The 2024 Met Gala Theme & My Forecast of What to Expect

Hi lovelies! I hope you’re all having a magical weekend. It’s been very rainy and wet this week in the Pacific Northwest, and being in the latter half of the semester, it’s been a bit difficult to juggle everything.

With that being said, some very exciting news has been released this week! The 2024 Met Gala theme has been announced, and I have some thoughts. The theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Upon first hearing the theme, I was a little confused by what it was alluding to. After reading a little about it though the main points seem to be the following:

  • The exhibit at the Met will focus on some very old and iconic pieces in fashion history. These pieces that are now too fragile for anyone to touch, let alone wear, are going to be available for patrons to observe using microscope lens tools.

  • Themes of “rebirth and renewal” will be present in the exhibit, and it can be expected that Met Gala attendees might style their outfits for the red carpet and the exhibition with this in mind.

I think celebrities and fashion houses might take the route of reimagining old and iconic pieces in more modern and intriguing ways. For example, the Junon dress by the house of Dior is a super iconic dress that was more recently recreated for Natalie Portman at Cannes this past summer. I think reimaginings of pieces like Junon, and its sister dress Venus would be an excellent way to pay homage to the originals, and playing with beadwork, silhouette, and color are all great ways to do this.

I’m interested to see also if fashion houses do anything with AI during the design process and how replicas might be produced that way. The use of AI in the arts and fashion world is pretty controversial, but I think if artists collaborated with AI tools and could somehow create pieces that are inspired and modern while not losing the essence of some of these vintage couture items, that would be a wonderful way to follow the theme.

Similarly, Zuhair Murad did a Junon recreation for Miley Cyrus that maintained the elegance and essence of the original piece, but the change in silhouette of the dress, adding the belt, and adding straps to the dress made for a lovely revisioning of the original.

Ultimately, I am excited to see what celebrities and fashion houses come up with in response to the theme. This theme is so magical and interesting, and I think it’s a great way to look back at fashion from the past while encouraging new designers to draw upon their own creative intuitions to showcase their wonderful creations and honor icons of the past. And of course, I mostly care about what Anya Taylor-Joy, Rihanna, and Blake Lively will show up wearing if they all choose to attend!
