Met Monday 2024 Recap: My Favorite Looks From This Year’s Gala

The Met Gala was on Monday, and I stayed up until 2 AM CEST watching the entire red carpet so I could tell you what my favorite looks were. The theme of this year’s gala was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and the dress code for this year’s gala was “Garden of Time.” It was really hard to filter through all the looks and pick my top favorites, and I was really disappointed to see some of my faves skipped this year’s gala (I’m looking at you Blake Lively). I got my wish for archival pulls, and to see more of my thoughts on the theme, see this article I wrote in November about my thoughts on the overall theme. Let’s get into some looks.

You guys knew this was going to be the first one. Our queen was styled in not one, not two, but three different looks. Not only did she serve, but she also ate. She looked absolutely amazing and on-them in all three. The first dress was John Galliano for Maison Margeila. I absolutely loved how dark and edgy this look was. Everything was amazing from the makeup, so the structure of the gown, and the drama and simplicity of it all. She looked absolutely stunning and I loved it.

The second dress, archival John Galliano for Givenchy was also really beautiful. I don’t know which dress I loved more. This was so regal, also very edgy with the all black, and I loved the detailing on the neckline and the sleeves. I also loved that we are not afraid of a dramatic headpiece! The floral headpiece was magnificent and added a beautiful pop of color to the whole ensemble reminding me of flowers peaking out of darkness.

For her final look, Zendaya wore Celia Kritharioti inside the venue for the event. This dress was more understated, and I think it was much more her. I loved all of these looks so much, and I’m always happy to see Zendaya at the Met.

Tyla

Tyla looked absolutely amazing for her Met Gala debut. I didn’t recognize her initially thanks to the cute cut she was rocking, but she looked amazing. I need her workout routine because you could literally see her abs through her dress after they mold it to Balmain. Her dress “Sands of Time” was styled by Katie Qian for Balmain. This dress was obviously a reference to the beach or the sea (or the desserts of Africa, where Tyla was born — not in the dessert, but in South Africa). The hourglass was such a nice touch to really help nail this look. I’m excited to see more of Tyla at future Met Galas after a phenomenal debut.

Alia Bhatt

I always love seeing South Asian designers highlighted at major fashion events because they are some of the most creative and meticulous artisans in the world. The saree Alia wore for the Met Gala was no different. She was dressed by famous Indian designer, Sabyasachi. The saree was hand-embroided with hundreds of gems, and it took over 1,000 man hours to create the saree. It showed, and Alia looked like a gorgeous river nymph.

Kendall Jenner

I will be honest and say I usually hate Kendall Jenner’s look for the Met Gala every year because she never dresses on theme. She usually looks fine, she just doesn’t follow the theme! But this year, Kendall totally surprised me because she dressed on theme and looked incredible doing it wearing archival Alexander McQueen. She literally looked like Sleeping Beauty from her hair all the way down to her toes. She was the first person to ever wear the dress since it’s conception in 1999. I loved all the sequins, the dark mood of the gown, and the scalloped cutout on the small of her back. All in all, she was probably the most on theme out of everyone, and I hope to see a repeat next year.

Emma Chamberlain

Remember what I said last year about twists on archival designs? I got to see that in this look, and that was so exciting! I really loved Emma’s look this year. She usually does really well on theme, and this year was no different. She was styled by Jean Paul Gaultier in a twist on a 2003 archival piece called “Morphing.” This gown is a very dark on the theme, and I love the corseting and the branches wrapping around the arms. It was gorgeous, and she looked gorgeous, and I can’t wait to see more looks from her next year.

Final Thoughts

There were so many looks I loved from Taylor Russell, Bad Bunny, Lana Del Rey, Aurora James, Anok Yai, Sabrina Carpenter, Wisdm, and more, but these were my favorites. But as always, let me know what you thought of the Met Gala looks over @itgirlarchive_ on Instagram. I would love to hear your thoughts about your favorite looks this year (or the looks you didn’t like!
